It was another cold, windy morning following a night of showers. The sky felt more like November than the advent of Spring. Could get depressing…except for the joy of the frogs calling out to the world that they’re ready to mate. Bring it on!

If I was a migrating bird I’d be VERY tempted to sit this trip out until the conditions got better. But I wouldn’t be a very successful breeder with that attitude. And they know it. So they push on. Today we encountered the first Brown Creeper and Swamp Sparrows of the year. Since the beginning of April I’ve been looking for Swampies but…..nothing. They must have come in during the night because today they were here. Subtle little things.
We used our time wisely: putting up nets between net rounds. So #’s 7, 9 & 10 are ready to go. I’ll put up #8 when the water in the wetland goes down another 20 cm and will add a couple to the meadow.

Banded 9:
1 Mourning Dove
1 Blue Jay
1 American Goldfinch
4 American Tree Sparrows
1 Song Sparrow
1 Swamp Sparrow
ET’s: 23 spp.
