Damn this great weather….April 22nd, 2008

Another gorgeous, summer-like day; sunny and clear and just a breeze. The frogs and toads were singing and the dogwoods have begun to leaf out. As Brian suggested yesterday, these are the conditions that raise your expectations. But the “new” migrants just weren’t around. Good conditions for Rhiannon to learn to band in but kind of frustrating when you’re chomping on the bit for warblers and thrushes and grosbeaks. What we need is some unsettled weather to bring the birds down to earth and stop up the migration for awhile.

Banded 20:
2 Blue Jays
1 European Starling
3 Chipping Sparrows
2 Field Sparrows
1 White-throated Sparrow
1 Dark-eyed Junco
1 Red-winged Blackbird
6 Brown-headed Cowbirds
3 American Goldfinches

Retrapped 8:
1 Northern Cardinal
1 American Tree Sparrow (quite late for this species)
1 Chipping Sparrow
2 Song Sparrows
3 Brown-headed Cowbirds
