May 17th – Even More Variety

It seemed a quiet day after the hectic pace of yesterday but with a steady trickle of birds through the nets and the odd new sighting we surpassed the previous day’s banding total with 60 banded today, and species total, with 71 species being encountered today.
The Prothonotary Warbler was not observed today and neither were several of the other species of warbler encountered yesterday. In their place was the season’s first Willow Flycatcher. It doesn’t seem a fair trade.

The first Scarlet Tanager was banded – a stunning ASY male, and a group of Purple Martin briefly descended upon the nesting box in the parking lot. Sadly, they did not find it to their liking.
