Migration Monitoring – April 10th, 2008 and a few pictures

It was kind of a slow day…I guess it feels that way because the Canada Geese have paired up and are nesting so you don’t see those big flocks of 50 – 100 birds honking across the sky as they head out to the fields to feed. There’s a lot fewer ducks around as well. Down the road from Ruthven there were ~12 Lesser Yellowlegs feeding in one of the muddy pools left over from the flood.

For the first time this season, we caught at least one bird in every net. Even so, we banded only 18 and retrapped 11. One though was a first for the year – the 1st Hermit Thrush (a SY bird with lots of fat).

Banded 18:
1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
1 Black-capped Chickadee
2 Golden-crowned Kinglet
1 Hermit Thrush
1 American Tree Sparrow
2 Field Sparrows
3 Song Sparrows
6 Dark-eyed Juncos
1 Brown-headed Cowbird

Retrapped 11:
1 Downy Woodpecker
2 Black-capped Chickadees
1 White-breasted Nuthatch
1 Golden-crowned Kinglet
1 Field Sparrow
1 Song Sparrow
3 Dark-eyed Juncos
1 American Goldfinch
