Migration Monitoring
April 27th, 2007

There was heavy rain and thunderstorms overnight which, happily enough, ceased just as I entered the driveway at Ruthven. Despite threatening several times throughout the day the rain held off and it was possible to band. The property was fairly quiet however, but still there were 45 species recorded on ETs, including the season’s first Lincoln’s Sparrow and a pair of Purple Martins that appeared just as I was closing. They investigated the Purple Martin Houses set up over the parking lot. Maybe this year?

Banded 24:
Ruby-Crowned Kinglet 2
Blue Grey Gnatcatcher 1
American Goldfinch 11
Slate-Coloured Junco 1 – apparently named Jerry according to its press credentials
Chipping Sparrow 1
Lincoln’s Sparrow 1
White-Throated Sparrow 2
Song Sparrow 1
Downy Woodpecker 1
Red-Winged Blackbird 3 – all females

Retrapped 8:
American Goldfinch 3
Chipping Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 2
White-Throated Sparrow 1
Downy Woodpecker 1

American Robins and European Starlings were observed carrying food for young, and several bits of American Robin egg shell were found scattered around the mansion.

Sidebar again

So it seems the sidebar issue has continued with the new blog theme. I’ve learned that this is not an issue with the theme of the website itself, but is a common problem that people run into when viewing WordPress blogs (that is what this blog is) using Microsoft Internet Explorer. Currently about 80% of this blog’s readers are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, and only about 17% are using Firefox, so I’ll have to fix this problem. I’ll attempt to fix it in the next few days, but in the meantime I suggest all you Internet Explorer users improve your lives by downloading Firefox 2, a really great browser.

You’ll find it at this link: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Update: It seems that large pictures were causing the sidebar to hide at the bottom of the page. As I said before, I think this is just a Microsoft Internet Explorer problem. I removed the large pictures from the main page, but if you go through the archives, you may lose the sidebar occasionally. I’ll have to find a more permanent fix later. For now, just download Firefox or scroll to the bottom if you need the sidebar.

Oh, and here is a website which may help explain why you should dump Internet Explorer: http://browsehappy.com/
