Migration Monitoring – April 3rd, 2008

Cold with frosty nets to start, but by noon Turkey Vultures and Red Tails were soaring upward on thermals in the wonderful warm sunshine. The river level was higher again this morning!! No chance of walking along the river flats or through the valley for census, unless you’re equipped with hip waders!

A pair of Sandhill Crane flew over, and a flock of nearly 50 Tundra Swans. A small number of “new” Juncos moved in. Quite a few Kinglets were around, but none were banded. Did I mention yesterday that the Redpolls had moved on? Well I banded one today. Birding keeps me humble!

Banded 16:
1 Common Redpoll
1 Black-capped Chickadee
2 American Tree Sparrows
2 Song Sparrows
8 Dark Eyed Juncos
1 Brown-headed Cowbird
1 American Goldfinch

Retrapped 7:
2 Black-capped Chickadees
3 American Tree Sparrows
2 Dark-eyed Juncos
