NSWO banding

Meet the Northern Saw-whet Owl!

The Northern Saw-whet Owl is the smallest owl in Eastern North America, weighing about 100 grams full grown. Every fall, avian biologists across the continent are united in their pursuit to catch and band Saw-whet Owls. Researchers across North America participate in Project Owlnet, an initiative to band and record data on these tiny owls to better understand their populations and migration.

HBO runs an owl banding site near Lowville, Ontario from September to November. There will be opportunities for members of the public to visit our site on select evenings to learn about Northern Saw-whet Owl banding!
