Ruthven Park
A beautiful day with three new birds banded for the fall banding season. On the first net round, early in the morning, the first two new birds included a Northern Parula Warbler and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Then, on my last net round while I was closing nets and picking out numerous leaves I was excited to see a Carolina Wren in the net (I had been listening to him calling throughout the morning). I banded a number of new White-throated Sparrows and with their arrival, soon it’ll be time for owl banding. The Northern Saw-whet Owl banding at the Ruthven Park Banding Station will begin in October!

Fern Hill – Sept 25th, 2015
It seemed as though it was going to be a slow day at Fern Hill with warm temperatures early on and very few birds moving. Around 10:00 there was a change in weather, bringing with it a mid-morning rush of birds! There was a total of 36 birds handled – 29 banded and seven recaptured. Out of the seven recaptured birds six were Eastern Bluebirds – two of which were originally banded May 28, 2015 in one of the Fern Hill Bluebird nest boxes!
The Young Ornithologists really enjoyed seeing the diversity of birds captured and put their identification skills to the test with the Eastern Phoebe that was caught today. It even became one of the members newest favourite bird.
