Intermittent drizzle for half the morning reduced the use of all our nets. But when there was opportunity we were catching (although not at the same rate as yesterday). We had nice variety – 19 species – and I also saw some neat birds: the first Red-headed Woodpecker that I’ve seen in several years and an American Woodcock that scared the daylights out of me when it exploded into the air right by my feet while I was doing the census. The strong winds that were forecast never materialized – at least to the degree expected – so that was a break.
Our banding total for the month of September is 793; this is the lowest total since 2008. It doesn’t even come close to hitting the 1,920 September total we had in 2012. Too much nice weather……?
