April 6th – Slow Going

Under Michelle’s guidance, we put up two Meadow nets. In this picture, after intense deliberation, she’s making it plain which way she would like it to run…. DOL

It was cold this morning – around the zero mark – but at least the wind had died down. “Local” birds, birds that are calling the Farm home for the nesting season (e.g., American Robins, Song Sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds) were out in full voice letting potential rivals know where their territories stood and that they were will to fight for them. But migrants, birds moving through on their way to more northern nesting grounds, were few and far between.

We ended up banding just 6 birds. So we put our efforts into finishing off putting up the last of the nets: two in the meadow. [When the water in the wetland subsides another 30 cm. we’ll put up the last net – #8]
Banded 6:
1 Golden-crowned Kinglet
3 American Tree Sparrows
2 Swamp Sparrows

ET’s: 29 spp

For those of you who are always wondering how Willow Ptarmigan keep their feet warm during those frigid northern Winters – they’re well feathered. Dave brought this back from a hunting/birding trip to the Cochrane area. -DOL
