March 29th – Ready!

An old friend! This Song Sparrow was banded by Nancy on September 15th, 2010. This is the first time we've seen it since (and Nancy processed it). Where has it been in the intervening years? -N. Furber

It was a great day to be working outside – we finished putting up all the mist nets; got the Purple Martin housing array set up; and even got some of the net trails chipped. (If any of you would like a workout without having to buy an expensive gym membership please feel free to spread wood chips on our trails!!) So we’re all set up and ready to go – banding/migration monitoring starts on Saturday, April 1st and runs continuously for 61 days, ending on May 31st. If you can help out in any way (scribe, do a census, just bird and let us know what you see, carry bird bags, bake…..) please feel free to drop in. Heck, drop in anyway just to be part of it all.
The gourds are on the pole and the doors are on the boxes - all set for the return of the Purple Martins. As soon as the first one shows up, we'll raise them up the poles. -N. Furber

The early migrants have been around for some time and are setting up shop – the Killdeer are checking out parking lot; the robins are territorial; as are the Red-winged Blackbirds (haven’t seen any females yet though); Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds are already vying for nest boxes.

It’s such a fine line for these early migrants. I wonder what the fallout will be from the bad weather forecast for tomorrow and Friday. Today, in the sunshine, there were swarms of midges – fuel for so many birds. Will they be around for the next few days?
