A light south wind had been blowing during the night – a headwind for migrants – and it was overcast on and off throughout the morning; this is usually good weather for banding at Ruthven. However, the wind picked up quickly, billowing the nets and filling them with leaves so our catch was more limited. Even so, we had pretty good numbers (for the conditions) and young Lukian Husak demonstrated that he could contribute by scribing – he did a great job!

Although we only had 22 species on the census, we had 53 species overall. The new net, 1A (“Nancy’s net”) accounted for 32 (41%) of the birds caught today. Nice going Nancy (and I think Christine had a hand in this as well). Whereas the 2 new nets that I came up with (8X & 8R) produced exactly….nothing. Nice going Rick (and I think Chris had a hand in this as well…).
