We opened on time but with the understanding that we might have to make a dash for it and close up again. Sure enough, two hours later a thunderstorm chased us into action and we close everything. The rain tapered off after about an hour but conditions were threatening (as well as the weather map) so we reopened only a few nets – ones that we could get to quickly if necessary.

Despite the conditions (or maybe because of them) there was a good variety of birds around; we counted 57 different species. (Ethan raised the “census bar” to 36 species.) But not a lot of them found their way into the nets.
