Ruthven

I’m not sure what ticks me off more: just getting the nets opened when it starts to pour and I have to run around and close them all (when, if it had started half an hour earlier, I could have stayed in bed) or trying to open the nets when the poles are frosted up and the nets keep sliding back down – like this morning….

It was cold and clear through the night again BUT no wind. So many of the birds that had been hanging around for the past few days waiting for that window must have taken off. Didn’t retrap any Golden-crowned Kinglets and only a couple of Juncos. American Tree Sparrows were also scarce. The first Osprey of the season showed up this morning, hunting over the river. There’s been reports of them being in the general vicinity for at least the past week but this is the first one here.

We had two interesting retraps: a White-throated Sparrow originally banded December 18/’05; recaptured December 28th and then again today having successfully overwintered in the vicinity.

The other was an American Treep Sparrow: originally banded April 2003; retrapped April 2004; and then not again until today.

Banded 29: 1 BCCH, 1 WBNU, 5 GCKI, 2 AMRO, 1 SOSP, 6 SCJU, 2 BHCO, 11 AMGO.

Retrapped 16: 1 DOWO, 1 WBNU, 1 AMRO, 2 NOCA, 2 ATSP, 1 SOSP, 1 WTSP, 3 SCJU, 4 AMGO.
