September 20th – Two Thirds Through September

Blue-headed Vireo – first one of the Fall. -KMP

Hard to believe that we are already two thirds through the month of September! And we’re still waiting for a “good” day – one on which we band more than 50 birds let alone a “great” day (100+). You will remember that our daily banding average for the first 10 days of the month was the lowest since we have been tracking this. Well, the daily average for the 2nd ten days is also the lowest; we banded 24 per day – well below the long-term average of 31. This can get pretty frustrating……you keep looking for signs that things will change, must change, but when they don’t…..

We continue to catch nice birds but in small numbers. Our first round was promising but then the bottom fell out and we caught very few.

Fern Hill School Burlington:
Hi Rick,
It was a nice day to be outside today, we all enjoyed the cooler Burlington weather. I was hoping our nets would be bustling but we had a slow paced day in the nets and on census. We banded a total of three birds and had an Estimated Total of 25 species observed throughout the day. We observed large groups of Robins, Blue Jays and Grackles throughout the day which made for busy counting for the students. We have also been excited to see a family of Eastern Bluebirds lingering around the school yard checking out the boxes two with their young. Hopefully they will remember our boxes next Spring.
We banded:
1 Common Yellowthroat
1 Red-eyed Vireo
1 American Robin
