September 2nd – Unsettled Weather

Young male Blackburnian Warbler.

A thunderstorm went through between 11 and midnight last night. It likely stopped migration in its tracks. This morning it was hot and very humid and there weren’t the number and variety of birds around that we experienced yesterday. We had only one “good” net round which produced a variety of vireos and warblers. But otherwise there wasn’t much going on…..just odds and ends here and there.

The rest of the week looks to be hot, reaching highs of 30 toward the end – very unseasonable. It will be interesting to see what it does to the mix of birds in our nets.

Bay-breasted Warbler; sometimes the smudge of "bay" (or brown) on the flanks is absent making the ID in the Fall trickier, especially when not in the hand.
