Some banding and a few pictures

On November 10th (yes, this post is a little late), Rick and I attempted to get a sample of the birds in the area, hoping to get and idea of which birds winter at Ruthven. The day was a little windy, and kind of chilly, and since Rick was busy with the Ruthven clean-up crew, I only opened nets 1, 2, & 4.

Highlights were a late Hermit Thrush, 7 Wood Ducks on the river (on census), and a couple of Northern Shrikes (on census).

Banded 10:
1 Downy Woodpecker
1 Black-capped Chickadee
1 Hermit Thrush
1 Slate-colored Junco
6 American Goldfinch

Retrapped 20:
1 Red-bellied Woodpecker
7 Black-capped Chickadee
3 White-breasted Nuthatch
1 American Tree Sparrow
1 Slate-colored Junco
6 American Goldfinch

Estimated totals: 25 species

ET’s: 25 spp

Here are a few pictures of the last bird we banded during the fall migration monitoring season, a hatch year Northern Shrike (photos taken by Fran Hicks):
